Milk Stool

Appenzell Painting:
Painting style from Switzerland – stylised flowers, multi-coloured
borders, animals and landscapes of winter through to the summer.
The milk stool was painted by Jo Sonja Jansen and taken from the summer issue 1993 Artist
Journal.
Traditionally painted in ‘stone pine’ which is fine grained and heavy. The
pieces are first based in white or off-white for the scene painting.
Preparation of Milk Stool:
1) Jo Sonja just based the top of the milk stool in one coat of ‘Jo Sonja Clear Glaze’ medium, dried and sanded it.
2) Transfer only a minimum of lines.
3) Ink in the design with a waterproof fine black pen or thinned Carbon Black.
Suggested Technique:
With transparent colours (colour + water) tint in all areas as follows:
- Bird: Gold Oxide tummy, Napthol Red Light wing and head, Gold
Oxide Area, Ultramarine Blue body.
- Man: Napthol Red Light vest, Turners yellow pants with Gold
Oxide in Centre, Turners Yellow horn with Gold Oxide inside ellipse, Gold Oxide dabs for
cheeks, Ultramarine Blue belt, Carbon Black hat with Ultramarine Blue flower.
- Flowers between men: Bottom tulip is Napthol Red Light with
Gold Oxide centre; top tulip is Gold Oxide with Napthol Red Light centre. All small
blossoms are Ultramarine Blue.
- Flowers between horns: Gold Oxide daisy with Napthol Red Light
centre and a ring of thin Ultramarine Blue around the middle of the petals. Napthol Red
Light heart with Gold Oxide dot flower.
- All foliage strokes and stems are Brilliant Green. Small
blossoms are Ultramarine Blue.
- Give the centres of all flowers are a small dot of Rich Gold.
- It adds a lot to give all areas a very thin ‘shadow
stroke’ of Brown Earth even under the hat brim on the man’s forehead.
- The piece is colour banded with Napthol Red and Brilliant Green.
Finish
2-3 coats of ‘Jo Sonja Polyurethane Varnish’ and/
or paste wax, as desired.
