About the Artist

Marilyn Meadows

Marilyn started painting at an early age with her parents encouraging her by first purchasing oil paints and brushes for her at the age of 10 years. She continue to paint until at the age of 20 when she found that the oils where starting to make her feel ill.

After a 20 year break from painting and a move to their present farm in Mid Canterbury, Marilyn was talked into going to a folk art class by a friend. After a couple of classes she was hooked.

Then 2 years later some friends asked her to teach them, she started with just one class a week and now teaches one afternoon and two evenings a week plus the odd workshop, Marilyn also travel teaches.

At the beginning of last year Marilyn planned and built Val Verde Studio on the family Dairy Farm in Ashburton. The studio is well equipped with all necessary supplies for students including wood, paint, brushes and a large selection of books. If they don’t have them they can get them

Marilyn enjoys painting with as many teachers as she can go to and really enjoys being able to go to overseas teachers when they come to Christchurch. She has designed a couple of her own pieces, and would like time to do more, but loves teaching and encouraging others into the wonderful world of folkart.

Marilyn was the President of the Folk and Decorative artist guild Canterbury for the 1999-2000 year.
